BAND BIO:
Band members Lupe Flores, Donovan Stewart, and Hozoji Matheson-Margullis have crafted something that so finely walks the line between cogent and chaotic that it's difficult to keep up – but so damn fun to try.
The three-piece has been longtime friends with amazing chemistry, and the uneasy, slippery mayhem on display here is only overpowered by the highly apparent sense of unity and love between the band members, whose sonic MO is driving, in your face, thrumming wildness. Their onstage chemistry proves unequivocally that this is a band worth hearing – and seeing.
Says Matheson-Margullis: "We're grown-ass motherfuckers who've been doing this a long time so, you know, none of us are putting on airs. This is our true, honest shit that we feel like creating because we feel like it. None of us are trying to get any money or fame off of this, it's purely for the love of playing and for the love of being together with a group of friends.
Though Tacos! might not generally consider themselves political, Kick Rocks is. Written by drummer/singer Lupe Flores, it captures lyrically the anger and grief following the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd and the following Black Lives Matter movement. It's unexpectedly serious, and that's what gives it power: these three friends make their grief and anger heard in this scolding but imperative tome.
