It was a legal victory for Alec Baldwin yesterday after prosecutors dropped the "firearms enhancement" charge levied against the actor and producer.

Had Baldwin been convicted of the involuntary manslaughter and firearms enhancement charges, he would have faced a mandatory five years in jail.  While he still faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, those come with a much lesser sentence upon conviction.

If Baldwin were to be convicted, involuntary manslaughter carries a jail sentence of just 18 months.

Per PEOPLE, the  firearms enhancement charge was also dropped against former Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who faces the same involuntary manslaughter charge as Baldwin.

Heather Brewer, spokesperson the Santa Fe District Attorney's Office, said in a statement Monday, "In order to avoid further litigious distractions by Mr. Baldwin and his attorneys, the District Attorney and the special prosecutor have removed the firearm enhancement to the involuntary manslaughter charges in the death of Halyna Hutchins on the Rust film set.

"The prosecution's priority is securing justice, not securing billable hours for big-city attorneys."
