Football is still king in the Lone Star State, and while don't think that position will be overtaken any time soon, there is one sport in North Texas that is quickly rising in popularity.
Sumo wrestling.
The Dallas Sumo Club meets every Wednesday morning at Kidd Springs Park to practice. The free, amateur club was started by Corey Morrison, who became obsessed with the sport back in 2019.
Morrison told the Dallas News, "The whole aesthetic and the rituals really sucked me in. It’s just so beautiful."
Morrison had a simple goal for starting DSC: he wanted to shed the stereotype Sumo carries that it's just "two fat guys in diapers."
The DSC is part of the United States Sumo Federation, which means they are allowed to compete in tournaments. Three members competed this past June at the US National Sumo Championships in Austin but Morrison says it did NOT go well. He described the competition as “hardcore” for such a new group.
Morrison says he keeps eyeing future tournaments. "I decided we need to practice more than once a week and up the aggression. Most of those guys had been doing it for years and we were really the new kids on the block," he said.
