A display at JCCC is breaking the stigma of sexual assault

Overland Park, KS - It's called, What I Was Wearing, and it's everyday clothes, such as jeans and a t-shirt, running shorts, and khakis. Each outfit represents what someone was wearing when they were sexually assaulted, and their story is posted next to it. The display is from a sexual assault resource center.

Ted Reinhardt, student engagement ambassador at Johnson County Community College, says the hope is that the minds of students will be stretched and better informed.

"The Purpose is to engage the students minds and challenge them to think outside of what they've been taught to believe," explains Reinhardt.

Student life coordinator, Brittany Martin says it's the diversity of the clothes that impacted her the most. She remembers seeing a little girl's sun dress and realizing that it's not just young woman who are victims.

"Even if you do have an awareness, it's easy to forget who is impacted by the negative choices of others," says Martin.

She says that seeing the clothes that people wore when assaulted makes it personal.

The clothes will be on display at the campus through the end of April. You can contact the student engagement center for more information.
