Kansas City, MO - The KC Streetcar Authority has received $50.8 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the Main Street Extension project.
“The significance of today’s federal funding announcement for the KC Streetcar cannot be overstated,” said Tom Gerend, executive director of the KC Streetcar Authority, in a statement.
Gerend said the federal funding will allow the project to move into the final design phase.
As of now, construction on the extension would begin in late 2021 or early 2022, and would open in 2025.
The plan calls for a 3.5-mile extension of the streetcar line from Union Station south to the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
