Kansas City, MO - There are few things more truly American than a good old-fashioned road trip. And with many vacations canceled due to the cornavirus pandemic, any excuse to get out of town is a welcome one.
Kansas City Magazine recently published a list of the 16 best social distanced-approved day trips within four hours of Kansas City.
The editor-in-chief of the magazine says one of his favorites is very close.
"When you talk about one hour away, you really can't beat Weston, there's so much to do there," said Martin Cizmar. "It's really a little jewel."
Want food and some drama?
They've got that in Pittsburg, Kansas, the home of a legendary fried chicken rivalry.
"There's just a little bit of small town drama around Chicken Annie's and Chicken Mary's, but all the chicken is very similar, and it's also very good," said Cizmar. "So that's a great little drive, it's beautiful down there in Pittsburg."
If you're looking to venture further out, and have a few kids to keep entertained, look no further than one of the world's greatest zoos.
Cizmar says the "the Omaha zoo is extra. It is just very extra, as the kids say now. You have this beautiful rainforest with a three-story waterfall, there are some kind of wild birds flying all around you, it's really transportive."
If you're seeking history and want to see where the largest city in what would become the US used to be? Head just beyond St. Louis to the Cahokia Mounds.
"It was the largest city in the continental United States for hundreds of years," Cizmar explained. "There's a massive earthen pyramid, and it's just this amazing thing to look out from and think about the giant society that was based there."
