Separated into two parts, with 19 total tracks, including "Anyone," which she debuted at the 2020 GRAMMYs, the title track "Dancing With the Devil" and "ICU (Madison's Lullabye)” as the Dancing With the Devil portion of the album. All of which detail Demi's struggles with addiction and near-fatal heroin overdose in 2018.
Fourth on the album is the “Intro,” followed by the “The Art of Starting Over,” which turns the page and starts a new chapter in Lovato's recovery journey with the remaining 16 songs.
Following her previously released single, "What Other People Say" with Sam Fischer, the album also includes highly anticipated collaborations with Noah Cyrus on “Easy," Saweetie on “My Girlfriends Are My Boyfriend,” and the one we’re all no doubt most excited about, "Met Him Last Night” featuring Ariana Grande.
Produced by Xavi and TBHits, believe it or not, “Met Him Last Night” actually marks the first ever collaboration for the two pop stars. On it, Demi and Ari sing the chorus in unison, “I’ve seen the devil, yeah, I met him last night/ One conversation, now he’s spendin’ the night/ I think I Iove him, though I know it ain’t right.” Das deep yo.
Opening up about several of the tracks while sitting down with YouTube's Released, Demi detailed her excitement about the song and working with one of her "really good friends.” Saying, "I played her 'Dancing With the Devil' and she was really, really excited about that and she came up with this concept... And when she played it for me, I was like 'Oh my gosh, yes, absolutely! I would love to do this.’ I was so excited to get to work with her and we had so much fun singing together.”
Along with the album’s release, Demi also dropped the music video for the title track, in which she recreated the painful series of events that went down on the night of her overdose, and the events that immediately followed including her hospitalization, blood transfusion.
The devil is also in the details, in the Lovato and Michael D. Ratner co-directed visual, with Demi wearing the same green jacket she was the night of July 23, along with various lookalike family members and friends weaved in throughout the painful retelling of the incident from three years prior.
The final shot of Lovato parallels the first, an up-close shot of her neck where her dialysis port was. However, in the final shot, a sponge wipes across her neck to reveal a tattoo that reads “Survivor.” Symbolizing that Lovato, went through hell, but after “dancing with the devil,” has come out on the other side stronger and ready to “start over.”
