Three-time All-Pro Richard Sherman remains a free agent, but it doesn't appear that a return to San Francisco is especially likely for the future Hall of Famer.
On Thursday's edition of PFT Live, Mike Florio said that not only are the 49ers all-but certain to move on from Sherman, but that if they had it their way, he would have been released after his first of three campaigns with the team.
"I've danced around this before, but I'm just going to go ahead and say it: it was my understanding heading into the 2019 - where he did have the rebirth fueled by the pass rush...was second-team All-Pro...was a Pro Bowler...unlocked millions incentives in the contract he negotiated for himself going into the 2018 season - that if Jason Verrett had stayed healthy, he was signed to replace Sherman, and Sherman would have been gone before Week 1. Verrett was brought in so they could move on from Sherman after one season...they were ready to move on after one season. And then he had the big season in 2019, and they kept him for 2020. And Richard has always been the one who has said 'this is over, this over, I'm moving on,' and the 49ers haven't said anything. The 49ers are not unhappy for him to move on, and I'll leave it at that."
Sherman, who will turn 33 next week, was limited to just five games in 2020 because of a calf injury. That said, just two seasons ago, Pro Football Focus gave Sherman an 88.9 grade out of 100. He may only be a fit for teams that run some variation of the Seattle defense, but that's relatively prevalent in the sport today.
Said defense, of course, became famous during Sherman's seven seasons in Seattle. There is apparently some mutual interest in Sherman returning to the Seahawks, though it is fair to question the motives of those who are leaking that information.
