Following rumors that the New Orleans Saints were working to bring Jameis Winston back for another year, the two sides agreed to a one-year deal reportedly worth $12 million, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Interestingly enough, NBA insider Shams Charania was the first reporter to break that Winston had re-signed, leading to some social media hilarity.
Schefter's ESPN colleague, Dianna Russini, had reported earlier on Monday morning that the Saints openly liked Winston and wanted to bring him back, though he won't be the starter by default.
That's probably because the Saints and quarterback Taysom Hill agreed to a seemingly shocking extension that isn't quite what it sounds like on the surface, and that Hill will be given "every avenue" that head coach Sean Payton can possibly give him to win the job, according to Russini.
"Before Taysom signed that incredible contract with the Saints, he had a conversation with Sean Payton, basically saying like, 'This is what I want: I want to be a starter. I don't want to sign this deal and play all these different positions for you. I've put in the time, and now I want my time as the quarterback to begin,'" Russini told The DA Show on Monday. "And Payton told him he'd give him that opportunity. He didn't promise him the starting job. He just said, 'I'm going to give you every avenue I possibly can to see if you can win the job.' "
Winston only attempted 11 passes in the 2020 regular season, completing seven of them for 75 yards. He notably hurled a 56-yard touchdown in the postseason, however, and obviously still possesses quite an arm that he used to throw for a league-high 5,109 yards (and 30 interceptions) in 2019 with the Buccaneers.
Here's to hoping that Winston and the Saints can eat some Ws together in 2021.
