On Monday, Lil Nas X debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for his single “Montero (Call Me By Your Name).” It marks the second number one single of his career following his 2019 hit “Old Town Road,” which set a chart record spending nineteen consecutive weeks at number one.

Lil Nas X took to Twitter to react to the news and had a message for his haters. “y’all told a 19 year old who had just escaped the lowest point of his life that he would never have a hit again,” he wrote.

“You told him to stop while he’s ahead. he could’ve gave up. but 4 multi platinum songs and 2 #1’s later, he’s still here. thank you to my team and my fans! Ily.”

He went on a tweet-spree following the news including a tweet saying “i hope my haters are sad. i hope they are crying. i want your tears to fill my grammy cup.”

Lil Nas X also shared a touching video he made back in June 2020 to congratulate his future self. "Congratulations," 2020 Lil Nas X says to his present-day self. "You deserve all the good s*** that's happening to you right now."

It’s been an eventful few weeks leading up to this moment for Lil Nas X as his latest venture caused a stir on social media. He teamed up with Brooklyn company MSCHF to release a line of shoes called “The Satan Shoes,” which are modified Nike Air Max 97s featuring 60cc ink, a bible verse, and a drop of human blood.

After users criticized him over the shoes, Lil Nas X responded by saying he’s not going to “cater to your children.”

“I made the decision to create the music video. I am an adult. I am not gonna spend my career trying to cater to your children. That is your job,” he responded to one user.

The “Satan Shoes” received so much attention that Nike brought forth a lawsuit against MSCHF. A judge ruled in favor of Nike and issued a temporary restraining order against MSCHF to halt production of the shoes. However, MSCHF said all but one of its 666 pairs of the “Satan Shoes” have been shipped already.
