KANSAS CITY - In a report from the Kansas Department of Revenue, the state ended the month of May with total tax collections at $657.7 million. That is $158.3 million, or 31.7%, above the estimate. Kansas House Speaker Dan Hawkins (R-Wichita) attributed this to last year's tax relief package.

"When we put money back in taxpayers' pockets, not big government, Kansas families and communities thrive," said Hawkins. "That's why we increased that relief with additional legislation this year."

The report also notes that total tax collections were down 0.2% from May 2024.  Corporate income tax collections were $29.2 million. That is $840,880, or 2.8% below the estimate, and down 26.8% from May 2024.   Individual income tax collections 85.1% above the estimate, and up 3.1% from May 2024. Combined retail sales and compensating use tax receipts were $282.1 million, which is $11.1 million, or 4.1% above the estimate, with no change from May 2024.

In a release accompanying the report, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly said, "Surpassing estimates this month is a positive indicator, but we remain diligent and focused on maintaining long-term financial health."
