KANSAS CITY - He was born 100 years ago this week -- Freddy Simon -- the late namesake and co-founder for one of the most recognizable businesses in Kansas, Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers.
Freddy's began with its original location in W. Wichita at 21st & Tyler, and now the fast-casual chain has an ever-expanding footprint throughout the United States and beyond.
Freddy Simon would often stop by the KNSS radio station on his birthday to spread the goodwill from his growing business.
Born in 1925, and the youngest of nine children, Simon grew up on a farm near Colwich. After graduating from Cathedral High School in downtown Wichita, Simon enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Pacific Rim-region during World War II. Simon was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during service, and a Bronze Star for valor, exiting after the war at the rank of Sergeant.
Returning to Kansas, Simon attended the University of Wichita under the G.I. Bill, and played basketball for the Shockers in 1946; he started a family, working in the business and hospitality industries for more than half-century, raising six children with his wife, Norma Jean.
At the age of 77, Simon lent his name to the new restaurant; the company says Freddy's family values and patriotic service to his country are the foundation of the restaurants.
Simon passed away in the fall of 2020, at age 95.
Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers currently has more than 550 locations in 36 U.S. states, and Canada.
