“Casualties” are being reported at a high school near Athens, Georgia, after gunfire erupted on Wednesday. Police say that at least one person is in custody at this time.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations has confirmed that four people have been killed and nine have been taken to various hospitals with injuries as a result of the shooting.

Police have not confirmed at this time how many were killed in the shooting or how many were injured.

The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office shared that deputies and first responders arrived at Apalachee High School at around 10:23 a.m. after receiving a report of an “active shooting.”

“Casualties have been reported,” the sheriff’s office said, also noting that “one suspect is in custody.”

Since the incident, all campuses of Barrow County Schools have gone into a “soft lockdown.” The Barrow County School District added that the high school has been “cleared for dismissal.”

“The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office says this is for the safety of everyone right now. Please do not visit your child’s school at this time. We cannot release students during a lockdown,” the school district said in a statement, ABC7 reported. “We will let you know as soon as BCSO says it is all clear for dismissal.”

Most of the activity has been centered around Apalachee High School, where police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and helicopters have all responded.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said that he is directing “all available state resources to respond.”

"We will continue to work with local, state, and federal partners as we gather information and further respond to this situation," Kemp wrote on X.

This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
