Vice President JD Vance has said some controversial things in his journey to the second highest position in the U.S. government. There is at least one that he regrets.
Vance recently admitted in a new book “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith” and in an interview with “The View” that his comment calling liberal women “childless cat ladies” was his “most boneheaded comment.”
During President Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign for the White House with Vance as his running mate, a 2021 clip resurfaced of Vance calling former Vice President Kamala Harris (eventually Trump’s opponent in the race) and other Democratic women “childless cat ladies” who “don’t have a direct stake in America’s future” and it sparked outrage. He told Tucker Carlson, who was then with Fox News, that these women were “miserable with their own lives.”
When the clip went viral in summer 2024, it caught beloved “Friends” star Jennifer Aniston’s attention. She criticized Vance for insulting women without children while some GOP-backed policies threatened access to fertility support like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
“When I make a comment that just closes people down instead of trying to appreciate the point that I make, that’s a mistake and that’s on me to do better,” Vance told “The View” co-host Joy Behar. He added that he still thinks the county has become “more anti-family and more anti-child.”
For its part, “The View” did give Vance some branded onesies for the child he’s expecting with his wife, lawyer Usha Vance. This will be the couple’s fourth child.
Following the interview, Vance joked that the experience was akin to “hostile, high-stakes negotiations,” with Iran that critics on the left didn’t think he was ready for, per the Daily Beast.
“I would point those progressive critics to the fact that just two days ago I spent over an hour on “The View”, he said. “So I actually have a great experience in very hostile negotiations.”
Vance did rearrange a trip to Switzerland to meet with Iranian representatives this weekend. While the Trump administration did come to a peace agreement with Iran, it was on shaky ground Saturday amid allegations that the U.S. and Israel had violated ceasefire arrangements.
