DANIA BEACH, Fla. — Spirit Airlines could begin liquidation as early as this week, according to people familiar with the matter, casting fresh uncertainty over the ultra-low-cost carrier’s future.

The airline is currently operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than a year after filing in August 2025. As recently as March 13, 2026, Spirit announced a restructuring support agreement with creditors and a plan of reorganization that would allow it to emerge from bankruptcy by early summer with a sharply reduced fleet of just 76 to 80 aircraft — roughly one-third of its pre-bankruptcy size.

That plan now appears in jeopardy. A sudden spike in jet-fuel prices, worsened by geopolitical tensions involving Iran, has derailed the slimmed-down business model that was already struggling with some of the industry’s thinnest margins. Spirit has lost billions since the pandemic began and saw its proposed merger with JetBlue fall through.

A liquidation would end operations for one of the nation’s largest budget airlines. It could eliminate thousands of jobs for pilots, flight attendants and ground crews while removing low-fare options for millions of passengers. In North Texas, Spirit serves both Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field, routes popular with cost-conscious travelers.

Spirit has not issued a formal statement on the liquidation reports. The company previously said it does not comment on market rumors and speculation.

The case is being heard in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Spirit maintains a dedicated restructuring website and court filing portal for creditors, employees and passengers seeking updates.

The development comes after Spirit had already rejected dozens of aircraft leases and cut routes in an effort to stabilize finances. Industry observers note that further consolidation among low-cost carriers could reduce competition and raise fares on many routes.
