The New Orleans Saints are reportedly ready to promote one of their backup quarterbacks to take over for the recently retired Drew Brees.
The Saints, who restructured backup Taysom Hill's quarterback over the weekend following Brees' retirement announcement, are engaged in contract talks to re-sign free-agent signal-caller Jameis Winston, according to Dianna Russini of ESPN.
The Saints "like" Winston and are hopeful they can bring him back to set up a potential training camp competition between he and Hill, Russini reported.
Winston, a former No. 1 overall draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, served as third-stringer last season behind Brees and Taysom Hill, and saw action when both players were out due to injury.
The former Florida State standout saw his star dimmed a bit over inconsistent play and what some said was a lack of maturity when he was a starter in Tampa, where he led the league in both passing yards and interceptions in 2019 before accepting the reserve role with New Orleans last season.
The Bucs had allowed Winston to talk in free agency last offseason, so they could snap up Tom Brady. The Alabama native and former Heisman winner turned 27 in January.
The window for "legal tampering" in NFL free agency began on Monday morning.
