The name of the deceased first responder was not released as of Thursday afternoon.

St. Louis Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson says two firefighters were on the second floor of the actively burning building and looking for possible occupants. He says the roof collapsed just as they decided to head back out.

One firefighter was killed and the other was taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries, but was conscious and breathing.
