Sanborn, N.Y. (WBEN) A popular Niagara County attraction is NOT canceled this year. Sunflowers of Sanborn is reopening for the season on Saturday, August 1. "We were really hoping to be able to open this year," said farm owner Louise Brachmann. "There is life beyond Covid. People come out to our farm to get away from everyday life."
Brachmann said they had to follow Covid protocols to reopen. They are installing new hand sanitizer stations, maintaining social distancing with food truck lines, and asking people to wear masks when they arrive.
This year, the hot, dry Summer has presented challenges. "It's been a real struggle. In addition to sunflowers, we grow corn and soybeans and with no rain the crops suffered. Our sunflowers were behind. Some are short, some are tall. They're all over the board," she said, but added that the last two rains have helped a lot.
Brachmann thinks the peak week will be the third week in August. The sunflowers are blooming now with the warm days and cooler nights.
