With all their side projects and commitments, it’s tough to get Mark Tremonti and Myles Kennedy in a room together, but when they are there it is magic. One of world’s greatest guitarists and one of the most amazing vocalists of any generation, coming together, perfectly intertwined for rock excellence.
The most common occurrence for this is with Alter Bridge, the band the two formed together 15 years ago and continue to explore new ground with throughout their new album Walk The Sky.
“That title comes from a song called ‘Walking on the Sky,’” Kennedy explains in the exclusive RADIO.COM interview above. The song about tightrope walkers that defy death by walking between buildings, felt like a fit for the overall theme of the album too for the band, enamored with its duality.
“Just kind of that elation, and that freedom, I feel like it kind of has a double meaning. You’ve got the tightrope walker, on one hand you can take it very literal, or you can look at it like you’re in a state of bliss.”
In all seriousness, it is actually tough to plan schedules for the band with the demands on both Tremonti and Kennedy’s time. But, with both so busy with various bands it has had an interesting side effect.
“As far as knowing what songs go where, we’ve been able to compartmentalize,” Myles explains. “You know what, it’s an easy way of having thick skin,” smiles Tremonti. “When you don’t like an idea so much, you can be like, ‘you know that really sounds like your solo project.’"
"Wait a minute, you’ve said that to me quite a bit,” Tremonti laughs.
In addition to working with Mark, Myles spends a lot of time with another guitar player you might have heard of named Slash. The two came together once again for the Living the Dream album last year, and Myles can’t quit praising the legendary rocker.
“What I like about Slash is that he’s very driven and he’s got an incredible work ethic,” Kennedy says of the Guns N’ Roses star. “He like got that inner child in him,” he adds. “He loves getting on rides and being a kid.”
“You guys eat out at Chuck E. Cheese?” kids Tremonti.
“I wouldn’t be surprised,” smiles Kennedy. “He’ll be in one of those things with all the balls.”
That sounds like an awesome time, until Myles immediately ruins it. “How unsanitary is that? I mean if you really break down what’s going on, it’s like fecal fun.”
“Fecal fun, that will be my new death metal band.”
While we imagine Slash playing in the ball pit, his top hat poking above the balls, you should enjoy these two amazing performances from Tremonti and Kennedy. Check out “Wouldn’t You Rather” from Alter Bridge’s new album, Walk The Sky, and the classic “Ghost Of Days Gone By.”
