Local Arizona Leaders Plan Face Mask Mandates in Several Cities

By , Audacy

Officials in several Arizona cities are implementing plans that will require residents to wear face masks.

On Twitter, Phoenix Mayor Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego tweeted that she would propose a face mask requirement for the city of Phoenix, reports ABC15.

Gallego said it would be brought to vote at the next city council meeting.

Tucson Mayor Regina Romero said that she is working with the City Attorney to include a face mask requirement in its emergency proclamation.

Other local leaders from around the state announced that they are planning or weighing face mask mandates, including officials from Scottsdale, Mesa Mayor John Giles, Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers and Flagstaff Mayor Coral Evans.

The various decisions come after a Wednesday announcement by Gov. Doug Ducey saying that local leaders can decide what face mask orders make sense for their areas.

Last week, it was reported that Arizona was bracing for COVID impact, with officials urging hospitals to activate emergency plans. Dr. Cara Christ, the state's Director of Health Services, has asked that hospitals "be judicious" in elective surgeries to guarantee bed capacity.
