ST. LOUIS (KMOX/AP) - A special prosecutor has been appointed to investigate allegations that Eric Greitens' attorneys threatened to ruin St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner, during last year's investigation of the former governor.
Retired Boone County Circuit Judge Michael Bradley of Columbia will complete the investigation and decide if charges will be filed.
According to Gardner's request for a special prosecutor, the St. Louis Police Department has completed its investigation and needs to consult with a prosecutor.
One of Greitens' attorneys, Jim Martin, calls the allegations, "outlandish."
He tells KMOX, "We've been aware for months that the police department has been looking at these silly allegations. They interviewed everyone and the detectives involved in the matter have specificially told us that members of Ms. Gardner's staff have denied that there were any threats made during any meetings they had with the Greitens' defense team."
Gardner had requested Presiding Judge Rex Burlison appoint retired Buchanon County Prosecutor Dwight Scroggins, who she says has no connection to her or anyone else in the case.
Bradley is a former is a former assistant Attorney General under then-AG Jay Nixon, who is a partner in the law firm Dowd-Bennett, which provided four of Greitens' attorneys.
Gardner charged Greitens with invasion of privacy in February 2018 for allegedly taking a compromising and unauthorized photo of a woman during an extramarital affair. The charge was later dropped but Greitens resigned in June 2018.Last month, a separate special prosecutor appointed over concerns from Greitens' attorneys indicted an investigator hired by Gardner, William Tisaby, for perjury. That investigation continues.
