Clayton, MO (KMOX) - The St. Louis County Board of Police Commissioners says it wants a review of the Police Department.
In a statement released late Tuesday evening, the Board says the review will be conducted by an outside firm. Commissioners want the review to include promotional processes, decision-making processes, and inclusion within the department.
The announcement comes on the heels of a multi-million dollar verdict against the department in a discrimination lawsuit brought by former St. Louis County Police Sgt. Keith Wildhaber, who said he was passed over for promotions because he is gay. Monday, County Executive Sam Page announced the resignation of Board Chair Roland Corvington and promised to make other appointments. Bishop Lawrence Wooten is Acting Police Board Chairman.
Once a firm is hired to launch a review, the Board expects a report within 90 days. The statement sent to KMOX News says results will be made public.
St. Louis County Executive Sam Page is responding to the Police Board decision. He was asked about a time line when the examination will be complete.
"I believe the police board has a goal to try and accomplish this in 90 days. That's our hope. That's our goal," Page says. "And this is a process that we haven't implemented before so I wouldn't want to present that to you as any sort of guarantee."
Page says he is concerned about accusations of discrimination within the police department, but that it's important good police services continue to be provided.
As for restructuring the police board, Page said he will make recommendations to the County Council for next week that will include some new commissioners.
