ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — Bob Costas will be in town this weekend to be honored at the St. Louis Baseball Writers' Dinner at Union Station Sunday night.

He will receive the Red Schoendienst Medal for "invaluable service to the game of baseball" after four decades of sports broadcasting.

Costas told Chris Hrabe last (Thurs.) night on KMOX's "Cardinals Countdown to Opening Day" that he's grateful to be honored not just at his hometown, but at one of the few cities that have these types of dinners anymore.

"Almost all Major League Baseball cities used to have it, but I don't see this ending in St. Louis anytime soon. The passion for baseball, both in-season and out, is what makes St. Louis so distinctive."

You can listen to Costas' conversation with Hrabe and Mike Claiborne below (starts at 56:56):

Former St. Louis Cardinals closer Lee Smith and current Cardinals players will also be honored.

The dinner takes places Sunday night at the Curio Hotel at Union Station. Proceeds from ticket sales go towards scholarships and a journalism internship. To purchase tickets, click here.

Costas will return to KMOX airwaves on Monday, when he joins Charlie Brennan for two hours starting at 9 a.m.
