St. Louis, MO (KMOX) - The typical stress that comes with taking care of a spouse or loved one is now compounded because of the current health crisis.
Some caregivers are concerned about getting ill and not being able to fulfill their daily responsibilities for a loved one, or of possibly infecting someone who has other medical conditions.
With COVID-19 related closures, some families also lack access to services they rely on.
"With that comes an inability to take their loved ones to adult day programs, or other respite opportunities become more limited," explains Sarah Lovegreen, Vice President of Programs for the Alzheimer's Association.
Lovegreen says it can be helpful to try to maintain some sort of routine with activities. For example, if your loved one enjoyed music programs, then it may help to set aside time to listen to nostalgic tunes.
Lovegreen says if you have worries about getting necessary supplies or services, or have other questions, you can contact the Alzheimer's Association on their 24-7 help line at 800-272-3900. You can also find specific COVID-19 resources at alz.org/mohelp
