Collinsville BBQ joint serving up free meals to kids every day

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) - A Metro East restaurant known for its massive pork steaks has shown it's just as generous when it comes to serving struggling families.

Red Top BBQ in Collinsville, Ill. has set up a food trailer next to it's Vandalia Street storefront, where it hands out free lunches for kids each day.

The restaurant started offering the meals shortly after the coronavirus closed schools.

Owner Melissa Gilmore says many families can't afford to put three meals a day on the table.  "We've had a lot of peole who have lost their job because of the coronavirus.  Some have applied for financial assistance and just haven't gotten it yet, so it's a big help for a lot of people."

Gilmore says they've been getting a lot of donations from the community to help provide the meals.  She says they've been handing out as many as 150 lunches for kids a day.
