Businesses like Lowes, QT ask for exact change as COVID leads to coin shortage

Lowes in kirkwood

(ST. LOUIS) KMOX - Banks are asking you to crack open the piggy bank.

When stores shut down because of COVID-19, the circulation of coins stopped too.  Plus, the U.S. Mint was cutting back on making coins at the time because of staffing changes to keep workers safe.

The federal reserve put limits on how much change banks would be given.  And now that stores are opening back up, many can't get enough coins from banks.

Quick Trip is one of the businesses experiencing a shortage of coins.  They're asking for exact change, or you may get your money back in the form of a gift card.
