JUPITER, Fla. (KMOX) -- A couple of weeks ago, I told John Mozeliak that he would have to calm me down about Dylan Carlson, the team's top prospect.
It seemed, at the time, that the chances of Carlson making the Opening Day roster were slim, especially considering his age (21) and the need to play him every day. That would make Carlson likely better suited for Memphis, at least at the start of the season.
Well, two weeks before the Cardinals break camp, Carlson is hitting .417 (entering Sunday's game).
I spoke with Mozeliak on Sunday morning and said to the team's president of baseball operations: "I'm not going to hyperventilate over Dylan Carlson, but..."
Mozeliak laughed.
I continued, asking about the possibility of Carlson making the 26-man on March 26, even with the increased competition in the outfield.
"What Dylan's done up to this point has been amazing," Mozeliak said. "The key will be what others do as well."
Those "others" are Lane Thomas and Tyler O'Neill... but also continuing to evaluate incumbents Harrison Bader and Dexter Fowler.
"The one guy we do need to start performing -- but I know he's working on some things -- is Fowler," Mozeliak said.
Hear Mozeliak, who joins us every Sunday, in his evaluation of the outfield in this roster discussion on KMOX.
