SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KMOX/AP) - All single-user bathrooms in Illinois are going to have to be gender neutral, after Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a law outlawing single user, single-sex bathrooms, Friday.
The change likely means a tweak to bathroom signs, which will no longer be able designate a specific gender and possibly a new commode. Senate Bill 556 described a "single-occupancy restroom" as a fully enclosed room, with a locking mechanism controlled by the user, containing a sink, toilet stall, and no more than one urinal.
Sen. Melinda Bush sponsored the legislation that was unanimously approved in the Senate and passed by a vote of 109-5 in the House.
Governor Pritzker says the new law is common sense and the right thing to do.
The law will officially take effect on Jan. 1.
