ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Ameren Missouri is offering to put up solar panels at your business, school, or other organization... for free.

"Many customers have been talking to us about how do we get solar on our property, how can we have solar adjacent to our property both for the grid attributes of clean and renewable energy and for the branding aspects - and in the case of schools, the educational aspects of that," Ameren Vice President Matt Forck said.

It's part of the new "Neighborhood Solar" program, which has the company spending at least $14 million to install solar generation facilities. Missouri legislators last year passed a "smart energy plan" which makes the program possible.

"We would pay for 100 percent of the solar energy. What they are trading for that or what they have in this is giving us the location, be it, canopy solar for a parking lot, rooftop, or maybe an adjacent field they're not using that we could place the solar (in)."

There's only one thing the recipient has to provide -- space for the panels, whether it's a canopy over parking, rooftop space, or an open field next door.

Forck says organizations which have a plan for solar beyond the electricity, like schools as he mentioned, will get a leg-up on their application.
