CLAYTON (KMOX) -- The St. Louis County Council has agreed to allow archery hunting of deer in county parks starting in the fall in an effort to thin the growing deer herd in the region. The legislation became law late last month -- the County Council passed it 5-2 and became law automatically when the County Executive didn't take action within 15 days."The idea of managed urban and suburban hunts is nothing new at all, we've been doing this for a number of years at Powder Valley Nature Center, which is in the Kirkwood and Sunset Hills area," said Missouri Department of Conservation spokesman Dan Zarlenga. "We've been doing it at Rockwoods Reservation in the Wildwood area, Klamberg Woods and a number of different places."Each scheduled hunt would still be subject to county approval, and council members can block hunts in their district if they don't want them."The council has to provide an order to allow a facilitated deer hunt by the Missouri Department of Conservation," said County Councilman Tim Fitch. "If a council person doesn't want a deer hunt in their council district, they don't have to support an order to allow a deer hunt."The deer season for Missouri bow hunters starts in mid-September.
