(KMOX) - U.S. Congress and the White House have reportedly agreed on a record-breaking $2 trillion stimulus bill that includes direct payments to Americans. So what kind of payments can people expect and when will they come?
The bill includes payments of $1,200 for single adults, $2,400 for married couples, and $500 for each child under the age of 17.
Everyone who earns less than $99,000 per year will qualify - which included about 90% of Americans. Those who earn more than $75,000 per year will see reduced payments.
Lawmakers set aside $250 billion for the so-called recovery rebates in the pandemic response measure, which is the largest economic rescue measure in history. The Senate is likely to pass the measure Wednesday afternoon.
As for how soon the checks will be sent out, it could be anywhere from two to six weeks. Checks will likely arrive faster for those who have filed their taxes electronically, since the check amounts will be based on 2019 federal tax returns, if already filed, or 2018 returns.
The virus has caused a global pandemic that has sickened more than 425,000 people and killed about 19,000 worldwide. In the United States, more than 55,000 people have been sickened and more than 800 have died.
