ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The Washington University in St. Louis Men's Basketball Team held an unusual and amazing draft announcement at the beginning of the season. They signed a 10-year-old named Gavin, who has overcome a lot in his life, to the nationally-ranked Division-III team.
Gavin was born at just 24 weeks - weighing 1 pound, 8 ounces. He had a stroke within a few hours of his birth and has needed extra care and therapy sessions at St. Louis Children's Hospital since birth. His doctors recommended he watch sports that have a lot of action for his eyes to follow – to strengthen the muscle.
He really latched onto basketball and through Team Impact got to meet and become the biggest fan of the WashU Bears. He started going to games and practices and the team completely embraced him. In November, it was made official by a draft day signing, through Team IMPACT, where Gavin became an official member of the team. He even got his own locker.
You can watch some of the highlights of his day in the video above, which was produced by St. Louis Children's Hospital.
