Christopher Columbus statue to remain in Tower Grove Park

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — Christopher Columbus is staying put in Tower Grove Park. The park board has ruled the controversial statue of the explorer will remain near the park's entrance.

Related: Christopher Columbus Statue Future in Tower Grove Park Still Being Discussed However, signs will be added nearby the statue with historical information about Columbus, along with the history of the park itself. Activists feel Columbus symbolizes a historical disregard for indigenous peoples and the destruction of their communities. 

A commission was formed to discuss the future of the statue. It was made up of three Native American representatives, two Italian-American representatives, and people from the Missouri History Museum, St. Louis Art Museum, the National Park Service, Black Lives Matter, and the "activist community."

The statue has been a part of Tower Grove Park for over 130 years.
