ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Washington University School of Medicine infectious diseases specialists Dr. Rachel Presti and Dr. Jane O'Halloran, study co-leaders, and Dr. Fred Buckhold, a SLU Care general internist at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital.
WashU researchers have launched a clinical trial to evaluate antimalarial drugs Hydroxychloroquine and Chloroquine and how effective they might be in combination with the common antibiotic azithromycin. Dr. Presti says this is only for COVID-19 patients at Barnes Jewish Hospital but could be expanded to other hospitals across the area.
She doesn't expect full test results for several months. But they are hopeful these drug combinations can provide some relief to COVID-19 patients but they caution nothing has been proven yet -- that's why they are doing this study.
