Coronavirus Facts Only: 'Young people more at risk for COVID-19 than first thought'

Dr. Fred Buckhold is a SLU Care general internist at SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital. Dr. Buckhold addresses new CDC warning for youth, new guidelines for healthcare workers and addresses listeners' questions.

The U.S. leader in the fight against COVID-19 is pleading with young adults: follow the CDC's guidelines on social distancing!

The plea from Dr. Anthony Fauci, the most prominent member of President Trump's coronavirus task force, comes after finding that a large part of those hospitalized due to the coronavirus, around 38%, are between the ages of 20 and 54.

As countless social media posts show young adults crowding bars, clubs and beaches, Dr. Fauci told CNN that those 44 and under are still at risk of infection.

And while young adults have a better chance at recovery, ignoring the guidelines will increase the spread to those at greater risk to die from the infection, the elderly and already-sick.

Dr. Fauci is urging young adults to avoid crowds and limit contact with others because we all "have a responsibility - a societal responsibility - to protect the vulnerable."
