Think St. Louis can do better? County is taking applications to join the Board of Freeholders

CLAYTON, Mo. (KMOX) — If you want to be leading the board that could do something about a possible city-county merger, better get your application ready.

The Municipal League says it's about ready to turn in petition signatures to convene the Board of Freeholders. That could happen by mid-September. Nominations would be due 10 days after those signatures are submitted.

Interested? Here's what St. Louis County Executive Sam Page would ask of you and the rest of the board.

"I would expect the Board of Freeholders to engage the community thoughtfully, to listen to testimony and take testimony, and come up with recommendations that are consistent with what they've heard," Page told KMOX's Michael Calhoun.

Those people would be appointed by the Mayor, County Executive and Governor. Each would get nine appointments.

How would he choose his appointees?

"I would want (them) to be representative of St. Louis County demographically. I would want them to look like St. Louis County."

The Board of Freeholders would take testimony and then craft a plan after that. The vote would be local-only.
