EDWARDSVILLE (KMOX) -- Devin Blume has been raising money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation for years. Organizations around the country get together to have events every year to raise money for the foundation that funds children's cancer research -- one of the more popular ways to show support is to raise money from donors to convince the participants to completely shave their heads. The idea is solidarity with cancer patients who sometimes lose hair through chemotherapy and other treatments.Devin did it last year too when Brett was first diagnosed."I was under the impression he would lose his hair, I thought cancer meant you lose your hair. I figured, what better way to support my dad than to shave my head bald? Turns out, he did not lose any of his hair. The entire time," Devin said. The similarities between Devin and Brett are uncanny. From hand gestures to mannerisms to a dry sense of humor complete with off the cuff jokes that hit just right. So it stands to reason that Devin also wants to help people, as Brett did through his journalism."It just ended up being a win win," Devin said. "[My dad] really appreciated the thought of it and, like I said, I raised $300 I think last year. It was just a great time."This year Devin was shooting for $750 in donations. He's already passed it.He's helping raise money for St. Baldrick's with his fraternity brothers at Sigma Tau Gamma at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville through a bags (or cornhole) tournament called Shave 'N Toss. It'll be held on the SIUE campus on April 1, the time has yet to be determined. Proceeds from the tournament entry and the raffle -- plus whatever you choose to donate -- all goes to St. Baldrick's.Brett died in October 2019 after a months long battle with multiple illnesses, including cancer.CLICK HERE to donate to Devin's St. Baldrick's effort.CLICK HERE to learn more about Sigma Tau Gamma's event on April 1.© 2020 KMOX (Entercom).
