ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - If you want a big fireworks display in Eureka this 4th of July, you may have to pitch in some cash to make it happen.

Mayor Sean Flowers has set up a GoFundMe to raise funds for this year's annual fireworks display, hoping to save some of the city's budget for necessary expenses during the coronavirus pandemic.

"The idea is to privately fund it, have the event, but help out with the city budget while we are getting through Covid.  Lets see how we do," the GoFundMe post reads.

In the first 12 hours since the post was set up Wednesday night, $1,825 has been raised. The goal is set at $20,000.

Flowers stated on Facebook, "The biggest concern was using city funds on this type of event while the budget is tight."

Two of St. Louis' biggest 4th of July events – Fair Saint Louis and America’s Birthday Parade – have been canceled due to coronavirus.
