ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A St. Louis area grocery store is on a mission to sell 3.5 million colorful eggs filled with candy.
Dierbergs is working with Creve Coeur-based American Carnival Mart (ACM), who was left with a surplus of plastic eggs after the pandemic canceled many Easter celebrations. This not only led to unsold eggs but left local people with disabilities that normally fill the eggs out of work. The business helps to employe 90 individuals with disabilities year-round.
“Our ‘Easter Bunny Helpers’ love filling the Easter eggs, taking pride in what they do every day and look forward to their job,” said Charlie Fischer, Executive Director for Canterbury Enterprises, a local sheltered workshop, employing people with disabilities in St. Louis County and City. “We have provided reliable and safe employment for people with disabilities for more than 35 years. Filling these eggs is a big part of their work each year. Losing these sales means there are no eggs to fill for the 2021 season, meaning we may be forced to lay off up to half of our employees. We are hoping to support them any way we can.”
From now until July 7, you can buy 50 eggs for $6.50 or 77 eggs for $8.99, with all the proceeds going to both ACM and those workers.
The candy-filled eggs can be found at all of Dierbergs' 25 locations.
