Metro East sheriff offers cash for turning in drug dealers

WATERLOO, IL (KMOX)-A growing county in the metro east is trying to keep drug dealers out, by offering a reward for those who turn them in.

Monroe County Sheriff Neal Rohling is offering $500 for tips that lead to the arrest of a dealer. Rohlfing tells KMOX the reward, which is tied to a hotline, might convince people who would otherwise overlook something, to report it. "It's an incentive for some of the people that know some of the people in the game that are selling some of the narcotics in the county."

Rohlfing has been offering the reward for about four years, and has handed out a few checks. "I'd love to do more, unfortunately with budgets and things like that...it's definitely an incentive and it has been an incentive in the past. It's a start."

The sheriff say he just wants to be able to say that he's done everything he can to keep drug trafficking out of the community. "If there's one thing that can dramatically change your way of life and your quality of life, is if you let the drug arena come in and go unchecked."
