ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — Businesses and researchers learn a lot about trends from online databases — but experts say cyber criminals have found ways to get to personal information.

Teams from the University of Missouri and University of Illinois will be looking for ways to stop attempts by hackers to build personal profiles from the information they sift through in public data sources.

The engineering and computer science experts will look at existing techniques for protecting private information in online databases — see where there are gaps in security — and come up with better ways to keep cyber thieves out.

The four-year project is funded by a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation.
