New 'mindful breathing' practice at local school teaches kids to calm their stress

ELLISVILLE, Mo. (KMOX) - Heard of Mindfulness? It's a form of breathing, a program that third graders at Ellisville Elementary are already benefiting from according to school officials. "The first time we did it, it was an inaugural run. We did 8 one hour periods, so we're very lucky," Assistant Principal Brian Gentz says. "It was a parent who cared enough that wanted to share and said, this will help our kids with anxiety, help them solve problems and help them understand, you know themselves, how to get through things."

Gentz says it teaches children how to breath and control their emotions when in difficult situations, such as stressing over a test.

"Mindfullness about how to breath about how to slow your breathing," Gentz says. "How to take deep breaths when you're into a situation that your uncomfortable with. Say, or you have anxiety about is taking some deep breaths and resetting yourself and then going into the situation that you are about ready to go into."Gentz tells KMOX, the lesson may be expanding to the 5th grade.
