MLS stadium construction plans hit a snag in Jefferson City

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMOX) — Construction of a Major League Soccer stadium in downtown St. Louis has hit a snag. The Missouri Development Finance Board is considering whether to award $30 million in tax credits over two years to help fund the project. But the meeting scheduled for Tuesday to further consider has been canceled, with no explanation given as to why.

PICS: New MLS stadium will turn downtown St. Louis west into 'destination' area The ownership group MLS4theLou told the Post Dispatch the cancellation came as a surprise to them. The group says there are so far no other plans in the works for getting that $30 million -- the entire project is expected to cost nearly half a billion. But Otis Williams, head of the St. Louis Development Corporation, told the Post they're trying to "sort things out."

The newest plans show the 22,500-seat stadium will be located just north of Market St. in the place of highway on- and off-ramps. And practice fields would be built on south side of Market St.

Construction of the stadium has been said to begin next spring, so it will be ready in time for the start of the 2022 MLS season and St. Louis' inaugural home game.

The team name and colors have not yet been announced, but MLS4TheLou previously said it will engage with fans and supporters throughout the process for input.
