MLS stadium project in St. Louis still on track despite tax credit setback

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — The group bringing Major League Soccer to St. Louis says stadium plans are still moving forward despite setbacks.

A lawyer representing the ownership group told the city's Land Clearance for Redevelopment Authority the project is still on track -- despite denial from the state for 30 million dollars in tax credits.

It's still unclear how the ownership group will overcome the gap -- but discussions continue with the state, which seemed receptive to fewer tax credits.

The St. Louis Business Journal reports the LCRA recommended partial tax abatements on improvements to the property for 25 years -- that idea would need approval from both the planning commission and board of aldermen.

The business journal reports the city plans to close on the purchase of land south of Market Street, currently used for interstate on and off-ramps, within weeks. Talks are ongoing to purchase properties on Olive Street in the stadium footprint.

A digital sign on Pine Street warns that the street, and ramp to Interstate 64, will close on February 3rd.
