ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -- St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson says public schools in the city will likely be delayed from August 24 to August 31."That is so teachers can be prepared for everybody to be doing virtual learning," said the mayor during Wednesday's Facebook live broadcast.Roughly two-thirds, or 65%, of families sending children to SLPS have opted for 100 percent virtual learning. The other 35% have asked for access to Virtual Learning Centers."Spaces in the (school) buildings will be open in order to provide technical support to kids, to provide meals to kids, to provide supervision, to provide counseling, to provide just ... help, with lessons and with homework," Krewson said.Bus transportation will be available to those centers.Krewson reiterates that even those who go to the Virtual Learning Centers will also be learning virtually. So every student in the district will receive an internet-connected device -- those in kindergarten through 8th grade will get an iPad, those in high school will receive Dell laptops. 4,000 WiFi hotspots will be available district-wide.Krewson says she spoke with Dr. Kelvin Adams, the superintendent of St. Louis Public Schools, but the school board still has to approve the plan.
