ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — Finding good reliable resources for parents and child athletes is not an easy feat. KMOX's Maria Keena talks to a mom, doctorate degree earner and publisher who is changing that.
"Dr. Google and phone-a-Facebook-friend really aren't great sources of good information."
Meet Dr. Stephanie Berk, a child development researcher and publisher of STL Kids Compete.
"I did start a parents' magazine, and that one was monthly, free to the readers, for four and a half years. Got up to 75,000 readers between the ages of 7 and 98. That was a wonderful way for me to learn how to do the magazine business while still impacting a positive change in the community," Berk said.
At a time when magazines and print, in general, are struggling in our digital world, Berk is bucking the trend.
"I went to potential investors and they laughed at me, and I said, 'I know, you think I'm reinventing the dinosaur and I'm asking you to fund a dinosaur.' And that's actually not the case," Berk said. "When you actually talk to people, there are several things that come about. First, people actually do really like having good information in their hands."
