St. Louis County police will be out in 'full force' for annual Saturation Saturday campaign

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - It's never a good idea to drink and drive, but you're really going to be in trouble if you try it this weekend because Saturday is the fourth annual "Saturation Saturday."

Fifty police departments throughout the state of Missouri, Illinois State Police, and local police and sheriff's departments in Illinois and police in at least 13 other states are stepping up their DWI enforcement efforts on Aug. 29 to remind the communities that they are out in full force, looking for impaired drivers.

It's held in conjunction with local law enforcement, MoDOT and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.

"Driving under the influence of alcohol, marijuana or any other drug or impairing substance is simply not worth the risk," said Cynthia Watters, IDOT's bureau chief of Safety Programs and Engineering. "Luckily, it's a risk that's easily avoided by planning ahead for a sober ride home. Make the right choice. It's literally a matter of life or death."

In Illinois, impaired driving fatalities have declined steadily in the last two decades, but crash data shows that more than 300 individuals still die in alcohol-impaired crashes in the state each year.
