ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Police in St. Louis could soon be wearing body cameras, after a vote on Wednesday at City Hall.

By a unanimous vote, the three-member Board of Estimate and Apportionment approved the plan to spend $1.7 million for the first year of a five-year, $5 million contract to outfit city police with body cameras.

Police Officers Association President Officer Jay Schroeder says the union is on board.

"It build trust in the public, it helps offices, it helps fight crimes, there's tons of tools with these crime-fighting cameras," Schroeder says. "Nobody's balking."

Mayor Lyda Krewson wants police wearing body cameras by the end of July. Schroeder says the union does want a 90-day pilot program for officer training and to get the system operational.
