HAPPY BIRTHDAY STAN! Today would be Musial's 99th birthday

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - "Baseball's perfect warrior ...  Baseball's perfect knight," would be 99 years old today. We wanted to celebrate Stan "The Man" Musial by sharing this tribute to the greatest St. Louis Cardinals player who ever lived.

Our sports director Tom Ackerman goes through Musial's career stats like his 3,630 hits (fourth all-time), 475 home runs (tied for 32nd all-time), both of which are still team records. He was in 24 consecutive All-Star Games, matched only by Willie Mays and Hank Aaron. The National Baseball Hall of Famer was a three-time National League MVP, a three-time World Series Champion with St. Louis and honored as part of MLB's All-Century team, as one of the best baseball players between 1900 and 2000.

He received the Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2010. He left baseball for one year in 1945 to serve in the Navy.

In the audio above you'll hear Harry Caray's call of Musial's 3,000th hit, the hit that tied Honus Wagner for most hits in National League history (3,430). And when he breaks the record three days later.

This Saturday, Nov. 23 is the 14th annual Musial Awards, which recognizes the most remarkable acts of sportsmanship and well-respected athletes. This year will be the first time the show will be broadcast to a national TV audience. The show will air on CBS on Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. EST.
