State of emergency declared in Missouri; 2 more presumptive positive COVID-19 cases

(KMOX/AP) - Missouri Gov. Mike Parson has declared a state of emergency and says two more COVID-19 tests have come back as presumptive positive in the state, Friday.

Parson said more information will be released later Friday about the new presumptive positive cases.

He says 94 total patients have been tested in the state and 90 have come back as negative. The second case in Missouri, which came from a patient in their early 20s and from a Springfield area clinic, was announced on Thursday by Parson. The first case was a woman in her 20s in St. Louis County who returned home from a study-abroad trip in Italy.

He was asked about the possibility of school closures in the state and believes it should be "made at the local level."

President Donald Trump declared a national emergency earlier Friday. Meanwhile, St. Louis County is banning events with more than 250 people, and some schools have closed early for spring break after Missouri recorded its second case of the novel coronavirus.

St. Louis County Executive Sam Page, who also is a physician, says prevention is key in fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

The Mercy health system plans to open a drive-thru testing facility in a St.Louis suburb as soon as Saturday.
